Team WP 3.2 People Powered: The Development of Translocal Civic Ecosystems amidst the Geo-Politics of War
The research aims to explore how and to what extent resilient translocal civic ecosystems have been built in the context of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, taking three urban contexts in Poland, Germany and Britain as case studies.
It does so by focusing on the role of social networks and their interdependencies, as well as power relations and boundary making mechanisms between a diversity of actors, including civil society organisations, grass-roots initiatives, international organisations, state institutions and, importantly, businesses.
We are particularly interested in exploring the role of historical and forced migrants within these networks, including migrant entrepreneurs and their engagement in civic-end goals. Using participant observation, in depth narrative interviews, as well as social network mapping techniques, the research will gather data from three distinct urban European contexts in order to map the breadth and strength of transnational ties and diversity of actors in each, comparing and contrasting their distinctive characteristics.
Project Lead:dr Karolina Czerska-Shaw, Sociologist, Ph.D. in Social Sciences, assistant professor at the Institute of European Studies, Faculty of International and Political Studies JU. Her research interests include migration and mobility, European Union migration policies, citizenship, civic education, transnational civic ecosystems, migrant integration, and diversity management. She is a member of the Jagiellonian Centre for Migration Studies and collaborates with the Multiculturalism and Migration Observatory at the Cracow University of Economics. She is the author of numerous reports and studies on the inclusion of migrants in Krakow and Małopolska, as well as the mobilisation of local civic actors in support of Ukraine and Ukrainian forced migrants residing in Poland. She has participated in expert teams advising local, regional and national Polish authorities in developing strategies for the inclusion of migrants.
Researcher from UJ: dr. hab. Jan Brzozowski, Professor UJ (Faculty of International and Political Studies, Institute of European Studies). Associate professor and Director of the Jagiellonian Centre for Migration Studies at Jagiellonian University. Economist with specialization in migration studies, his research interests include: immigrant & refugee entrepreneurship, migrants’ transnationalism, socio-economic integration of migrants and refugees, return migration and social remittances. He is currently a Deputy-Director of the Committee for Migration Research of the Polish Academy of Science and the Editor-in-Chief of Studia Migracyjne-Przegląd Polonijny.
International Researcher: Dr Roch Dunin-Wąsowicz (University College London) is a lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Sociology at the UCL Social Research Institute (IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society), a Research Associate at the Conflict and Civicness Research Group at LSE IDEAS, and a Marcin Król Fellow at the Visegrad Insight in Warsaw, Poland. His current research interests cover transnational entrepreneurs and businesses working towards civic end-goals in support of Ukraine, as well as how in the context of populism, social movements channel civic discontent, counter de-democratization, and enhance democratic resilience in Europe.
International Researcher: Dr Iryna Lapshyna (Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv/Osnabruck University). PhD in International Economics, Associate Professor at the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies, Osnabrück University. Since 2016 she is an Associate Professor, lecturer at the Ukrainian Catholic University (Lviv). Previously she was a Senior Researcher at Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS), University of Oxford, working on the ESRC-funded project ‘Does immigration enforcement matter? Irregular immigrants and control policies in the UK’. She is also a Research Associate at the South East European Studies at Oxford (SEESOX), University of Oxford.
Researcher from UJ: dr hab. Patrycja Trzeszczyńska, Professor UJ (Faculty of History, Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology). Anthropologist, specialist in Ukrainian Studies. Her research interests include migrations and mobilities, diaspora, diaspora-forming processes in Central and Eastern Europe, ethical issues and methodologies in migration studies, sensory ethnography, memory, gender studies.
