Workshops Call: Emotional Responses to the Liberal World Order: Between West and East | 14-15.03.2024

Although researchers have discussed the issue of emotions in world politics for 20 years, the problem still seems to be a challenge for IR scholars. It is beyond doubt that emotions are of great importance in world politics. Nonetheless, there are different ways of studying their impact on the international environment, diverse ways of defining them, and the meaning attributed to them. Hence, there still seem to be more questions about emotions in IR than answers.

Additionally, by linking the role of emotions with the problem of international liberal order dynamics, one should ask a question regarding different perspectives of defining emotions. As diverse agents contest the current global order, they might use their perceptions and emotions that trigger them to challenge the international order as well as the discourses and structures that create it. Thus, the workshop aims at addressing the following questions:

• What is the role and importance of emotions in (de)legitimising values-based international liberal order?

• How to address emotionally based arguments and communication strategies in international relations

Therefore, among the key objectives of the research workshop, we see:

• Discussion on developing the methodology for analysing emotions' role and importance in contemporary international relations.

• Tracing the process of contestation of liberal values (who, why, and how is questioning, what is the role of emotional factors, what are contesting strategies and roots).

• Tracing the process of contestation of multilateralism (who, why, and how is questioning, as well as patterns and mechanisms of multilateral cooperation in the regional and global dimension).

• Providing a critical and comprehensive diagnosis of emotionally driven perceptions and misperceptions of democracy.

• Defining and examining the intersections between emotions and populism in the context of IR relations studies.

The workshop will result in a joint Special Issue proposal, submitted to one of the leading IR journals. We will aim to keep this event relatively small, with around 15 participants.

The workshop is supported by the Flagship Project Future Democracy Lab at the Faculty of International and Political Studies, Jagiellonian University in Kraków.
